if it has one of these and two pedals, it’s not a manual.
idc how many numbers it has next to the Ds, don’t list it as a manual.
when I come see it in person, with cash in hand, don’t play dumb and say “ummmm yea it’s a five speed” because after spending an hour in traffic, I will not be amused by this explanation.
also, when confronted with a car that reeks of gas and the fuel gauge on E, don’t bother saying you had “issues” trying to fill it up when the issue is clearly the gasoline falling out the bottom and trailing behind it.
ETA: Photo credit to The Truth About Cars. Actual vehicle was in much better shape, but still auto
on the bright side, I turned this frustration into a 30# deadlift PR.

Well there’s your problem: literally everything. Why not come up to Ontario and buy this used G-Wagen ?
(Spoiler: that’s probably an even worse idea)

You have to push down a pedal to shift out of park. Manual.

also that’s a photo from TTAC because it was the only example I could find, the actual one was in better shape at least.

Damn. Weak sauce. I report all Craigslist ads that say manual then it’s obviously not. It’s something of a hobby

I can’t speak to this person, but I’m not at all convinced that most of these people even know the difference. I mean it is pretty clear that outside of a few very small niches, a manual transmission is less desirable to buyers, so why lie about it (especially since you will immediately get caught in that lie if someone comes to look at it).
Though for that matter, if you want to sell a car, take a couple minutes to snap 20 pictures and this shouldn’t even be a problem.

Wow, you look at even shittier cars than I do

This guy was also a 350Z owner, so I think that speaks for itself.

I updated the caption - actual car was in much better shape, but I used an example photo from TTAC.

If ‘D’ is drive, why is there a ‘D’ next to the numbers 3 and 4 but not 1 and 2?

A lot of cars that aren’t Toyota require driving with two hands and two feet, even in an automatic. Like when the TPS goes and sometimes it feels like shutting off, so you have to keep your foot on the gas and brake at the same time so it doesn’t stall!
sorry, I had to :p

Hey now. I used to own a 350Z.... Convertible. Gasp!
I came out just fine though. I guess because the key words there are ‘used to’

I think the idea is that it will hold 1 or 2 if in those positions, but in D3, it will shift between the lower three gears as normal, but stay out of high gear/overdrive. D4 is “normal drive” with all four gears being automatically shifted through.

Mine won’t shift until I *manually* push the shifter right to engage the next gear. I can then *manually* hold a gear as long as I want until I *manually* engage the next gear.
I’ll get my flame suit ready.

This is especially frustrating when you are looking for a car that sold manual in very, very low numbers. I was looking for a Lexus IS250 6MT for a while. Manuals must be less than 1% of the second-gen IS’s but maybe 10% of tha ads claimed manual. I don't bother to go look at anything listed as a manual any more unless a picture of the shifter or 3rd pedal is in the ad.

I’m actually programmed to automatically tell people they’re wrong. I require a manual override to confirm correctness.

It never ceases to amaze me how many cars are incorrectly listed as having a manual transmission.
No, your ‘03 DTS doesn’t have a manual transmission, dipshit.

As a person who is constantly searching auto trader and CL for E46 M3s, I whole heartedly endorse this, and would also add that an SMG is not a manual, either. I don’t care what the “M” in SMG stands for- it’s still not a manual.

I’ve been stranded by literally every vehicle I’ve owned besides my old Cherokee with >250k and my Ninja 250 so it’d at least fit in.
